The election for governor is still more than a year away, but the field of Democrats vying for the job continues to grow.

Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy filed paperwork Tuesday to form an exploratory committee with the Elections Enforcement Commission in Hartford.

The filing is Malloy's first step in a run for governor in 2010. However, it is Malloy's second attempt to become governor. In 2006, he won the party's nomination at the state Democratic Convention, but lost in a primary to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano.

At the time of his gubernatorial run, Malloy was also running a campaign for mayor. He says he will not run two campaigns at once anymore. His term as mayor is up this year.

Meanwhile, two other Democrats have also entered the race. Former House Speaker Jim Amann, of Milford, and Secretary of State Susan Byciewicz.

It is not yet known if Gov. Jodi Rell (R-Conn.) will seek re-election.
