Stamford Mayor David Martin announced a traffic study Friday to address about 200 problem areas in the city.

The flagged locations are where drivers could find themselves sitting at a stoplight for a significant amount of time, the mayor said.

According to officials, the city's roads could see reduced travel times if the stoplights were synchronized. The mayor's $750,000 project will seek to accomplish that goal.

"If we can improve the efficiency while keeping the roads as safe or safer than they have been, that's just plain a benefit for everybody," the mayor said. "It makes it a more livable city, and quite frankly, I don't want to sit in the intersection burning up gas and putting pollution in the air."

By the 16-month project's end in 2018, the mayor said he expects a moderate improvement at some of the intersections. Some improvements could come as early as late next year.
