Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy is proposing getting rid of backyard trash pickup across the city, which would force residents to bring their cans to the curb.
Malloy said 40 to 70 percent of people living in Stamford already bring their trash out to the curb. He said money saved on city labor costs for the backyard service would help Stamford meet its budget next year.
Some residents said they'd rather bring their trash out to the curb than have someone going through their backyard.
Others said it was a matter of safety. ?I'm capable of putting it out, so why should someone go in my backyard and hurt themselves if they don't have to?? one Stamford resident asked.
Still some said they worry that the elderly will hurt themselves trying to carry the heavy cans.
