Voters in Stamford are deciding Tuesday who will lead the state's second largest city.
Four years ago, Mayor Caroline Simmons made national headlines when she beat former New York Mets and Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine to become the first female mayor in Stamford's history.
Simmons has focused her campaign on infrastructure, specifically her work on improving the city's schools and roads. Simmons has also promised that during a second term, she would work on improving train station and bridges
The Democrat is being challenged by Nicola Tarzia, a former school board member, vocational teacher and local business owner.
Tarzia has argued that the city is becoming overdeveloped and believes his resume puts him in a position to make sure future building is done in a responsible way.
"Not that I'm anti-development, but I'm for controlled development. That's where my expertise comes in as a builder and as a lifelong Stamford resident, it's controlled development and build Stamford properly," he says.
If Tarzia wins, he will be the first Republican mayor since Michael Pavia, who was in office from 2009 to 2013.
