Staples' Hiro Wyatt was so good this year, he earned the Connecticut Gatorade Baseball Player of Year award.
The Wreckers pitcher was lights out leading up to the state baseball tournament, posting a 0.67 ERA with a 7-0 record and 90 strikeouts.
"It's a big award and it's a big reflection on the school and the program when a kid wins an award like that," Staples head coach Jack McFarland told News 12 Connecticut. "He's throwing at about 70% strikes and he's throwing four different pitches on all different counts. It's tough to get a beat on him, and the movement on his ball is really good."
But there is still one thing Wyatt has to do: Win a state championship.
"For me, it's like the reason I transferred to Staples to win this, so it'll be great if we could win it," he said.
The USC commit is slated to start Saturday in the Class LL championship game.
"I think to really get good and separate yourself from others, you just have to love the sport and love the work and just stay consistent. That's what I feel has allowed me to improve throughout the years and continuously improve," Wyatt said.
Staples' last state baseball title came in 2019. The program has played in the state championship game four of the last seven seasons.
The Wreckers' skipper is excited for the matchup with Fairfield Warde.
"We think we're playing our best baseball right now which is kind of like a coach's dream, right? Sometimes you peak in the middle of the season. We're really swinging the bats and playing well right now," McFarland said.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting between the two programs this year with the Mustangs taking two of the last three.
Fairfield Warde is the defending state champion.
First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown.
