It was a star-studded opening night on Broadway for the most anticipated musical of the year -- "The Music Man."
It’s the biggest Broadway opening since Broadway reopened last fall with the star power of Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.
"The Music Man" is a revival of one of theatre's most acclaimed musicals on a night the cast and fans had waited for a long time. Originally scheduled to open in 2020, "The Music Man" was postponed as Broadway shut down in the pandemic, leaving star Hugh Jackman to rehearse at home, as his wife actress Deborra-Lee Furness describes.
“We had a big piece of wood at home and he just had to tap dance at home, sing at home, my kids listened to him for about a year prepare,” Furness said.
As "The Music Man" began previews late last year, there was another setback -- Omicron. Jackman and Foster were among the cast who contracted COVID-19, forcing performances to be canceled.
Opening night brought out stars including Ryan Reynolds and Anne Hathaway, and political leaders, including New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
“To see that they're back here tonight is a real testament to the strength of New York City, the strength of this industry,” Hochul said.
"The Music Man" was first performed on Broadway in 1957, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical, but choreographer Warren Catlyle said audiences should expect a fresh look to this old favorite.
“Every single step you see is completely original to this production and completely original to me,” Catlyle said.
"The Music Man" is performed at Broadway's famed Winter Garden Theatre, where many believe it may be just the show to help bring Broadway back
"The Music Man" is known for the popular songs "76 Trombones" and "Ya Got Trouble." The show's a hot ticket, but several $49 rush tickets are offered when the box office opens each day.
