The New York Yankees were supposed to kick off their 85th and final season in the House that Ruth Built Monday, but Mother Nature intervened.
Rain postponed the game against the Toronto Blue Jays until Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.Once the season does start, it will mark the end of an era for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees will be moving to a new stadium across the street from the current one in 2009. The team has won a record 26 World Series titles in the current Yankee Stadium.
Before learning of the rain delay, fans were excited for the historic season.
"Concerts don't excite me like this, nothing excites me like this," said fan Lisa Bowan. "I love opening day."
And while some fans might not want to see the old stadium close, others aren't worried about the team moving into a new home.
"There is great history here, but there's going to be great history next door," said one diehard fan waiting for the start of the game.
Fans will get an extra chance to enjoy Yankee Stadium this season as the Yankees will host the 2008 All-Star Game in July.
