State health officials are warning residents Wednesday about a mosquito outbreak along the southwestern Connecticut shoreline.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station says it has seen a spike in the salt marsh mosquito. Officials say the mosquito is mainly located around high tide in coastal areas.

"You have a high tide, these lunar high tides that occur once a month during a full moon," says CAES Dr. Phillip Armstrong. "They flood the salt marshes and create these temporary pools where the mosquito breeds."

CAES officials say the mosquitoes mainly bite during the day but don't carry disease. They say the mosquitoes are only a problem along the immediate coastline and that any bug spray with DEET works extremely well.
