Republican state lawmakers decided not to vote to override Gov. Dannel Malloy's veto of their budget plan Tuesday.

The vote was expected to happen at noon. They have until next Tuesday to try and override the veto, or it will stand.

Minority Leader Rep. Themis Klarides (R-Derby) urged lawmakers to support the GOP budget that passed more than two weeks ago.

Malloy vetoed the GOP plan last week, citing changes to the pension system and cuts to higher education.

House Majority Leader Rep. Matt Ritter (D-Hartford) suggested trying to pass only parts of the budget that both sides agree on in a separate vote next week.

"A significant portion of that budget, we're on the same page. So accept that reality, let this budget go forward, and then let's take the time and pick out those sections you don't like," said Sen. Len Fasano (R-North Haven).

Without a budget, schools face massive spending cuts. The state's largest teachers' union has threatened to sue over those cuts.
