The State Department of Transportation says through the end of July there were six bicycle fatalities in our state.
The same time last year there was only one.
As we reported, a 13-year-old in Stamford was hit and killed while riding a mini bike Saturday night.
In February, a teen on a bike was hit and killed on Connecticut Avenue near Lowes.
In March a bicyclist was hospitalized after a hit-and-run driver struck them in Bridgeport near Laurel and Cleveland avenues.
The number of biking/e-biking deaths could reach double digits this year for the first time in years.
The state DOT urges people to pay better attention on the road in their car and on their bike or the results could be fatal.
"If someone was hit by one of these larger vehicles, they don't go up and over the hood as maybe they used to with a smaller sedan or a smaller vehicle. They're getting run over," said Connecticut DOT spokesman Josh Morgan.
The good news is, starting Oct. 1 there will be stricter laws in place for bikes.
Kids will have to wear a helmet until they're 18.
