State officials are keeping a keen eye on the gaps between Metro-North trains and the station platforms.
Senator Andrew McDonald (D-CT) says federal guidelines state that there should be no more than 5 inches between the platform and a train. At the Stamford station, however, the gap measures 8.5 inches.
Metro-North officials say they perform routine checks to make sure that the gaps are a safe size. They also say the gap differs from station to station depending on the curvature of the track.
Rail riders say they want Metro-North to reduce the gap size. They say even though an adult can usually step over the gap, it still can be dangerous.
