State police are cracking down on oversized vehicles on the Merritt Parkway.

Police say they are getting up to 30 calls a day about trucks that exceed the 8-foot limit on the Merritt. They say it is those vehicles that hit overpasses and cause accidents.

News 12 rode along with state police Monday as they pulled over an out-of-state box truck heading north.

Police say drivers should heed the signs that disallow commercial vehicles as they enter the parkway, but many are too reliant on their GPS. Those who ignore the signs risk a $92 fine.

The King Street overpass near the New York state line has been hit 15 times since April, according to authorities.

The state is putting up new signs on the Merritt Parkway intended to stand out more to drivers. They will be bright yellow with black lettering, instead of the current signs that are white with black lettering.

Police will be out in full force on the Merritt for the upcoming holiday weekend.
