Republican State Sen. Tony Hwang announced he plans to run for Fairfield first selectman after petitioning for a special election.
First Selectman Bill Gerber died of complications from a brain tumor last month.
Acting First Selectman Christine Vitale was appointed by Gerber as he underwent medical treatment. Vitale says she is interested in filling the job permanently.
Fairfield Republican Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick failed to endorse the idea, opening up the possibility for Hwang to run.
Democrats will name a first selectman on Monday, Aug. 25.
After that, anyone can petition for a special election if they get 5% of registered voters within 15 days.
