Stop & Shop donates perishables to food pantries amid workers strike

Stop & Shop workers have been on strike for over a week now, but there is one silver lining for residents in need.
Stop & Shop says it has been working with its food bank partners throughout Connecticut to donate as much as it can, to minimize food waste while supporting the communities the shops service.
The company is donating items like meat and other perishables that were not sold during the strike to food pantries across the state.
"Nobody wants to see food wasted and I think there's a tiny bit of good coming out of a bad situation with regards to the food getting to people in need," says organizer Tom Mercaldo.
Organizers say many pantries are usually low on food donations this time of year. But they say they are able to donate much larger Easter baskets this year.
