For a closer look at just how fast this is all coming down in Stamford, let's check in with News 12 Connecticut's Greg Thompson. He's at the Stanford train station, and, uh, you've been getting around and the train might be the safest way to go. So first of all, how have the roads been on your trip there? Yes, pretty much nothing is good right now. Michelle nailed it when she said that it's accumulating and sticking right away. The snow started coming down right around 5:15 or 5:15, as some of us call it right here in the Sanford area and it stuck right away. So even in, you know, just a little amount of time, look over here, look at how much it's already been accumulating right here on the side of the train station. We're talking 1 inch plus right there. If you look at some video of other parts. Around the train station you see it's already on the backs of cars on the window sills, making it tough to drive. You already are talking about needing to dig your car out. It's something you have to do right now. All the people walking off of their trains or getting dropped off here and having to deal with this on the sidewalks on the streets around here. Now we mentioned the roads also. You think somewhere like 95, that's got to be safe, right? Not so fast, my friend. This is how things are looking going. North on 95 a little before 6:30 you can see slow going right there. That road again one of the busiest roads, if not we would say the busiest in the country, already a mess right now and that's why Stanford Mayor Caroline Simmons declared a snow emergency and was telling everyone, please stay off the roads if you can and let the city's snow plows try and come through and do the best that they can during all of this. They'll start with the emergency roads first to make sure that there's safe access, and then we'll get to all the roads that we can as quickly and efficiently as we can, and that's why we're urging residents to stay off the roads tonight and tomorrow. Move your car if it's on one of those designated snow emergency routes, and please focus on your safety tonight. Now if you're not sure if your car is on one of those snow emergency roads, there are red and white signs up around and we also have all of them listed on our website, news12.com under numbers and links. Now if you're you're for some reason stuck out of this, if you don't have a place to go tonight or don't have a warm place to go, the city's warming shelters are also all open tonight. And we know everyone has different ways of getting through a big snowstorm, and News 12 Connecticut's Greg Thompson is in Stamford and joins us now with more on how some folks might be pushing through. Greg, it is looking snowy over there and some folks taking their time on the road behind you. Yes, I tell you, Tom, you can see that journalism degree is coming in handy for you. You are very observant. It is indeed coming down out here. It started right around 5:15. The flakes starts coming and they were sticking pretty much right away, a lot like Michelle said. She's had some heavy accumulation, definitely sizable girth behind us and only a little bit of time. We have maybe 0.5 inch to 3/4 of an inch. The snow clouds have already come by a couple of times here on the road. Mayor Caroline. Did issue a snow emergency here in Stamford up until 6 p.m. tomorrow, pretty much telling everyone to stay off the roads. Now a lot of businesses took that as a sign to also shut down early, but not every business. We're talking about Burn's Tavern right here on Hamilton Avenue. They say they're actually staying open for their normal hours up until 2 a.m. tonight, which is what they usually do on a Friday. Our staff here telling us that big storms also mean big business. Giving people in the area a place to come and stay warm without also being stuck in their house. And thanks to the location here, sort of in the middle of a few different neighborhoods, people are able to actually just walk here and then walk back home so they don't have to worry about driving after having a few too many to drink or driving when the roads are not in good shape. So just responsibility all around. It's a combination enticing enough, they say, to even bring in some people who wouldn't usually be here. I haven't worked a snowstorm in a while, but yes, it was interesting, I'll say when I did last. A lot of new faces, um, different crowd, different style of music that we're used to, um, stuff like that. And I tell you what, if this snow keeps coming down like this and we end up getting stuck here, we're going to see what they think about Third Eye Blind because that's the type of music I'm going to have on here all night long. Now on a serious note, if you do have your cars parked out on one of the city here in Stamford snow emergency streets, you do have to move it off of there to let the plows come by. A lot of their garages downtown are open for free because of that. Also, the warming shelters are open throughout the city. Greg, those trucks gonna have a long night ahead of them. Yes, they absolutely are. Those trucks and pretty much anyone who's out and about around here like Michelle just said, kind of the calm before the storm right here. They are getting ready in Stamford. Mayor Caroline Simmons has declared a snow emergency and that's going to be in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow. Like you said, all these trucks, all these plows, everything full of salt behind me getting in formation, getting ready for what you said, what is going to be a very, very long night into the morning here ahead now. You heard that term snow emergency. We've heard it from a few different towns and cities here in the area. So the question is what exactly Does that mean well here in Stamford, it means mainly even though it is a big travel weekend with people trying to bop around after Christmas and trying to get to different places, the city is saying to stay home and try not to be on the roads unless there is no other choice or it's an emergency. Next up, if your car is parked on one of the designated snow emergency streets here in Stamford, you have to move it so the plows can get through. We know a lot of other cities have things like that. We've called back additional personnel to work so that we have enough crews to work. Right now they're out treating the roads and they'll be working through the night and the morning, so we definitely had to increase our personnel, make sure we had our salt and fuel ready to go, so we are prepared for this storm. Now another important part of this, obviously not a time you want to be outside between the cold and everything coming down, so the city does have its warming warming shelters all open throughout the night.
