Residents met at Greenwich Town Hall to support 26 riders participating in the third annual Sandy Hook Ride on Washington. 

Each rider in the group, which consists of men and women, represents the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.

The roughly 400-mile trek began in Newtown Saturday morning, passed through Greenwich and will conclude in Washington, D.C.

Riders say they make the trip to encourage Congress to pass stricter gun laws to help prevent another mass shooting such as the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

The group says it is focusing on getting universal background checks passed into law. Members say that passing stricter legislation would make a huge difference toward keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

The trip is expected to take the group about four days to complete.
