Stamford-based Americares is mobilizing to help those desperately in need medicine and medical supplies in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

Americares plans to ship three tons of medical supplies to the island.

Americares has had a team on the ground in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria hit, and aid workers are reporting back that thousands of people are desperate for those supplies.

The relief organization has received donations from 200 pharmaceutical companies of materials ranging from IV fluids, hypertension medicine, antibiotics and more.

But Americares' Donna Porstner says relief workers on the ground in Puerto Rico are running into logistical issues.

"It's very difficult for our team to move around," Porstner says. "There's so little fuel, we've been on line just to get gas to go on assessments to the health care facilities."

In order to scour the island for residents in need, workers in Puerto Rico are using duffel bags filled with as many supplies as they can carry. 

The shipment of life-saving medicine is scheduled to be unloaded in Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Americares is also helping Dominica, where four tons of supplies will be shipped to arrive by Monday.
