A local nonprofit that helps people with disabilities held its annual fundraising dinner in Darien Saturday night. 

The Building Hope Foundation was started about 18 years ago as a way to demonstrate that the building and real estate community cares about those in need. 

News 12's Frank Recchia hosted the Celebration of Hope dinner put on by the foundation at Waters Edge at Giovanni's late Saturday. 

Speakers at the event included autism advocate Charles Fuller, of Bridgeport.

The organization has built many wheelchair ramps in Bridgeport at no charge to the recipients.

Organizers say they do much more, from offering music therapy lessons for children with autism and veterans to feeding the homeless. 

Michael DeRosa, of the organization, says the main goal is to help those who can't always help themselves. 

"It's very great to give, especially this time of year, it's all about giving,” he says. “So we are able to use our resources to get together and get back, that's the main focus, to help people with something they can't do on their own."
