Fire officials: Crews rescue 6 people from icy Burr Pond in Torrington

Six people were removed from Burr Pond in Torrington Sunday after becoming stranded on thin ice or falling through into the water.
The Torrington Fire Department says it received the call shortly after 11 a.m. It says five ice anglers had fallen through the ice or had become stuck, and a bystander had also become stuck while trying to help them. They were about 100 feet offshore.
A total of six people were removed from the water and ice. Two people were flown to the hospital for treatment and two were taken by ambulance for treatment and evaluation.
A firefighter was also hospitalized for evaluation for over-exertion, but is expected to be OK, officials say.
Authorities are reminding residents that the ice is "extremely unstable and must be avoided at this time" due to the warm weather.
