Cleaning crews got to work at a Stratford elementary school Friday after officials confirmed a coronavirus case involving a child.

It's the first case involving a child in Connecticut.

In a news conference, town and health officials urged all students and staff who work or attend Wilcoxson Elementary School to stay home and self-monitor for 14 days.

While the student who tested positive recovers at home, officials said other schools should not panic and the recommendation to self-quarantine only applies to Wilcoxson students and staff, and not families.

It is unclear when and where the exposure took place. The student's identity has not been released.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Janet Robinson said the decision to close all schools was made as a precaution.

School officials say the plan is to go forward with distance learning, starting Monday.

Mayor Laura Hoydick says Town Hall will remain open, but any meeting considered nonessential will not take place.

Health officials say they will continue to track down anyone who may have been in contact with the student who tested positive.
