Monday marked the third anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
This year was the first time that the anniversary fell on a school day.
Newtown school officials say they did everything possible to make the somber occasion as normal a day as possible for students. Counselors were available for them throughout the day.
All Newtown schools opened with a moment of silence Monday morning. The principals of the middle and high schools read a brief message about the anniversary.
The superintendent says he opted to open the schools with most parents' blessing.
A new Sandy Hook Elementary School is set to open in less than a year.
