Students protest proposed education cuts
Staples High School students protested Monday over proposed cuts to the Board of Education budget.
The Board of Education says that in order to maintain schools as they are it will take a five percent increase to cover teacher contracts.
With the proposed budget very close to the $95 million spending plan, cuts would have to be made.
Students believe that cuts in robotics, computers, art, music and social studies classes will hurt their ability to get into college.
"The quality of the education simply can't be the same," student Mikey McGovern says. "At Staples, teachers are promised small class sizes so they can work closely with those classes. Now with all these cuts, that will change. There will be less face time, less devotion to students because we simply won't have the same resources."
A town meeting Tuesday will determine whether or not there will be another million dollars in education budget cuts.
