An alarming study from the Regional Young Adult Substance Abuse Project has shown about one in five teens in Stratford has carried a weapon for protection.
The report comes on the heels of a stabbing at Stratford High School and another fight that led to the arrest of three students. The study asked if at any point in the last year the teens had carried a gun or knife for protection.
While 79 percent answered never, eight percent said once. Four percent said twice and nine percent said three or more times.
The teens were not asked if they brought the weapons to school.
The study was also conducted in Bridgeport and Fairfield. Those results have not yet been released, but the group running it says Bridgeport had higher percentages of teens carrying weapons than Stratford while Fairfield was lower.
