A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Montgomery Township after New Jersey State Police executed a search warrant tied to a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, authorities said.
Detectives with the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit executed the warrant on March 17 at a home on Addison Avenue in Somerset County, according to state police.
The teen was charged with distribution of child sexual exploitation and abuse material, possession of child sexual exploitation and abuse material and cyber harassment, authorities said.
Officials said the suspect was taken to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center, where he was jailed pending a detention hearing.
Following reports about the investigation, Montgomery Township School District leaders sent a letter to families acknowledging the situation and addressing concerns within the community.
School officials said they are aware of allegations involving the misuse of artificial intelligence to create and share inappropriate images of students.
District leaders said they cannot discuss individual students or details related to the investigation because of student privacy laws.
The district said it is cooperating with law enforcement and confirmed that all parties affected by the matter have been contacted.
“This is a difficult moment for our school community,” the letter said, urging families to talk with their children about respect, consent, online safety and the potential permanence of images shared online.
