93ds agoNews 12’s Elizabeth Hashagen was joined by Dr. Chethan Sathya, a pediatric surgeon and director of Northwell Health's Gun Violence Prevention Center, and Erica Ford, the founder of the anti-violence nonprofit LIFE Camp Inc., to discuss President Joe Biden’s plan to end gun violence.
Biden came to New York City on Thursday to meet with Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul to announce new actions targeting gun violence.
Dr. Chethan Sathya said an important factor the president and Adams emphasized was that gun violence is a public health issue.
Biden and Adams have also said they don’t believe the resolution is to "defund the police." Instead, Biden says, "the answer is to come together, police and communities, building trust and making us all better."
Ford says Biden has shown his investment in community violence intervention programs through federal acts. She says the key to end gun violence is to coproduce public safety within communities through these programs.
Dr. Sathya says the conversation isn't just about illegal guns but also increasing safety around legal guns.
Ford says children are often put in dangerous situations because they come from communities that are under resourced.
