Getting to the water may took some weaving through rows of umbrellas on Saturday as thousands headed to Jones beach to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
The beaches were packed with people swimming, playing games and relaxing on the sand as they celebrated the holiday weekend.
Other Independence Day festivities happened across Long Island, but many people chose to spend their day at Jones Beach.
Thousands of people arrived early in the morning for a good spot. They said as long as you don't mind the crowds, it's a perfect way to spend a hot weekend.
“I never thought the beach would ever get this crowded,” said Anthony Ferrezza, of Holbrook. “This is nuts.”
But visitors said it was worth it.
The Jones Beach Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular also celebrated America’s 250th birthday later that evening.
Many of these visitors spend the whole day at the beach and stayed for the fireworks show.
“We packed the cooler. Everything's packed for afternoon, nighttime and then going out afterwards,” Ferrezza said.
Many people say they’ll be back Sunday for the FourLeaf Air Show.
