Thousands run in annual 5K in honor of teacher killed in Sandy Hook shooting
The seventh annual Vicki Soto 5K kicked off Saturday in Stratford in honor of a teacher who died protecting her students during the Sandy Hook shooting.
Nearly 4,000 runners crossed the finish line in Soto's memory.
All the money raised goes to the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund, which gives scholarships to students pursuing a career in education.
Natalie Gallucci is a teacher in Fairfield at Tomlinson Middle School. She ran with 30 other colleagues in honor of Soto.
"Just to think about her today, keep her in our thoughts, has been really awesome," said Gallucci.
Soto's cousin Jim Wiltsie created the run seven years ago in an effort to make sure her passions live on.
Many restaurants and breweries donated food to the event.
Wiltsie thanked the Stratford community for pitching in for the event.
