The extreme heat on Monday had Norwalk residents cranking up their air conditioners.

David Soderstrom, owner of Climate Care, says that his company received more than 40 calls on Monday.

Soderstrom says that most of those calls were for air conditioner repairs as a result of owners failing to maintain their units.

Soderstrom has a few suggestions to help maintain air conditioners. He advises residents to schedule yearly maintenance appointments with an HVAC technician to avoid future problems.

Soderstrom also says that one of the biggest mistakes people make is setting their AC temperatures too low. He tells his clients that while it's tempting to crank up the air conditioner on extremely warm days, doing so can cause the machine to overwork and break down.

"Never go below 68. And, on a hot day, keep in mind, these systems are designed for 20 degree differentials," he says. "So, if you have a day that's a 100 degrees out, let's not try to go 68 degrees on that day."

Soderstrom also suggests other simple maintenance tips such as cleaning air filters or checking drain lines.
