The Bronx Trans Collective in Highbridge has become the first center of its kind to combine resources from six different organizations and make them all accessible in one place.
Those services range from health care to housing. Before the Bronx Trans Collective, or BTC, people in need of such resources were often sent to various locations around the city, which can be tough for those living on fixed incomes, or dangerous depending on the area.
Members of the transgender community say the BTC is a place where they can not only unite, but also provide the next generation with support and acceptance.
Starting April 18, BTC will have drop-in hours every Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The space on Summit Avenue is actually donated, which means it won't have to pay rent or utilities for one year.
BTC members say they will start fundraising and applying for grants to keep the center open for years to come.
