UConn officials say this year's freshman class is setting records in both size and academic achievement.
UConn President Susan Herbst and Gov. Dannel Mallow discussed the future of the university ahead of the new semester.
Herbst says the incoming class of 5,500 students is the school’s largest ever.
The class of 2022 also boasts the highest SAT scores in school history.
Herbst said, "This is a class of record breakers. This year UConn had the highest number of freshman applications in the University's history and more than 38,000, 38,000 people applied to UConn. To put that in perspective, that's a 236 percent increase."
About 3,700 freshman will attend class at the main campus in Storrs,.
The other 1,800 will attend classes at one of the school's satellite campuses, including UConn Stamford.
