United Illuminating says Hurricane Sandy cost the company nearly $40 million and it's hoping customers will cover that expense.

U.I. announced that it plans to ask state regulators for permission to recover its losses from ratepayers.

Officials say about 40 percent of the money was used to replace damaged power poles and equipment along the shoreline.

The rest was spent on overtime and fuel for trucks.

CL&P has not yet announced an estimate of its storm costs.
