There's a cautious optimism among Long Islanders filling up their cars today that gas prices could soon come down.

The two-week ceasefire deal struck between the United States and Iran to temporarily halt the war briefly dipped oil prices, but the deal being on thin ice sent prices back up to where they were, meaning no relief at the pump just yet for us on the island.

The average cost of a regular gallon of gas is $4.06 on Long Island, according to AAA. That's up 9 cents from this time last week and up 72 cents from this time last month.

Experts warn not to expect the quickest turnaround.

GasBuddy, which tracks gas prices around the country, estimates it could still take one to two weeks for the cost of a barrel of oil to be down for the average price of a gallon of gas to get back below $4.

Some places on Long Island are below $4 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.

If you're paying cash, the Sunoco on Willis Avenue in Albertson, 76 on Merrick Road in Seaford and the Gulf on Fulton Street in Farmingdale are among the lowest in Nassau County. While US Petroleum Route 109 in North Lindenhurst, Gas Sale on Maple Avenue in Smithtown and Conoco on Middle Country Road in Centereach have some of the lowest prices in Suffolk County, all according to GasBuddy.
