Victim of fatal New City fire confirmed as 88‑year‑old woman

The victim of a deadly fire in New City on Sunday has been confirmed as 88‑year‑old Myrna Hirsch.

Clarkstown police said they responded to a structure fire at 71 Carolina Drive around 9:05 a.m.

Firefighters said initial reports suggested someone might still be inside. Crews encountered intense fire conditions and a partial collapse as they worked to bring the blaze under control.

Officials said Hirsch was found inside the home after the fire was extinguished. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An announcement said Hirsch is survived by her husband, three children and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at New City Jewish Center.

Residents in the neighborhood said they were shaken and saddened by what happened.

A cause of the fire was not known as of Sunday afternoon. Officials extended condolences to the family and said more information will be released when available.
