A heartbroken community gathered at New Milford High School Monday evening to mourn the loss of a senior
who died in a car crash on Friday and pray for a classmate who was seriously injured in that crash.
Friends and family say Julio Gomez was known for his bright smile, outgoing personality and sense of humor.
People gathered in front of the school and lit candles, offering prayers for the other people injured in the crash — several of whom were hospitalized in critical condition.
Gomez was a passenger in a car driven by his classmate Skylar Fitch.
They were headed north on Route 7 Friday when their car collided with an SUV making a left turn near a local pizzeria — then struck another vehicle. A small memorial now marks the scene.
"He was a delight," said Arryn Crosskey. "It's going to be heartbreaking going back to school tomorrow because it doesn't feel real yet."
Grief counseling has been available at the school.
