When William Bernhart retired about 10 years ago, he wanted something to do. So after researching alpacas, he decided he would get some, raise them and open his farm to the public.
Alpacas are native to the Andes mountains - about 10,000 to 13,000 feet elevation - so they live on the Alta Plano, which is the high plains. Alpacas were domesticated for their fiber.
"Alpaca fiber is one of the finest fibers in the world. It’s also a hollow fiber so it’s very insulating," said Bernhart. "It’s warmer than wool. It’s hypoallergenic so it doesn’t itch. "
There is an extensive selection of alpaca fiber products available in the farm store, including hats, scarves, shawls, gloves, mittens, socks and other accessories.
Bernhart said his herd of alpacas are gentle and docile. A visit to his tucked away farm can be a relaxing trip.
While in town, there are plenty of things to do. Bernhart says, "
Chester is a wonderful place to visit. There’s a lot of things to do in
Chester, as well as in surrounding towns like Essex, Deep River and East Haddam, so it’s it’s a great place to come for a day trip — or a week itinerary. "
