Dozens of volunteer fire departments across the state were holding open house events Saturday to mark the start of National Volunteer Week.
The Easton Volunteer Fire Department is among several in southwestern Connecticut that opened its doors to the public in hopes of recruiting new volunteers.
Visitors were able to talk with volunteer firefighters about the work they do, check out the trucks and equipment and fill out applications.
The chief says more than 80 percent of all fire personnel in Connecticut are volunteers, so open house recruiting events are important.
Along with Easton, Darien, Stamford, Noroton and Noroton Heights are just a few of the area departments that were holding open house events.
