Despite cold temperatures and an impending storm, a group of volunteers from Keep Norwalk Beautiful met for their first community cleanup of the new year at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday.
The team said they most often pick up cigarette butts and small liquor bottles.
While they serve the entire city, volunteers said the shoreline is one of the most littered spots.
“There’s microplastics in everything nowadays, we try to prevent it from physically going into the water,” said Luis Estrella, executive director of Keep Norwalk Beautiful. “Every time we pick up here, we pick up hundreds of pounds and that’s hundreds of pounds less that’s going to sink to the bottom of Long Island Sound.”
The group usually meets on Saturdays. For anyone interested in volunteering or hearing more about their schedule, you can click here.
