Stamford High School students are planning a walkout this week to protest a recent proposal from the school system to remove principals at several high schools.

Parents told News 12 that Westhill High students are expected to walk out Tuesday to protest Superintendent Tamu Lucero's decision to remove their principal. The Westhill walkout is scheduled for later Tuesday morning, while Stamford High students plan theirs for Thursday — to avoid interfering with a visit from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges on Tuesday.

No explanation has been given for the proposed principal transitions. Lucero, Stamford superintendent for the last seven years, will finish out the school year after her contract was not renewed; a new superintendent must be hired by July.

This is not the first time parents and students have been angered by school system decisions. They were already upset about proposed flexible 4x4 schedule changes that were voted down for next year.

"Basically, they've pierced the soul of Stamford. This community is reaching out; they're sad. There's no trust, and the Board of Ed should be able to put their foot down immediately and say we direct this decision-making," Board of Education member Rebecca Hamman said.

Stamford Public Schools emailed this notice to parents and students:

"Any students who are not present during instructional time will be marked with an unexcused tardy or absence. In addition, no students are permitted to leave school grounds without prior approval."

There is also a petition to save the principals.

Sources say Stamford teachers passed a vote of no confidence in the superintendent last Thursday. We reached out to the school system for comment but have not heard back.
