As spring temperatures rise, so does the potential for wild brush fires in southwestern Connecticut. Fire experts say it doesn't take much for a wild brush fire to start, especially in dry conditions. According to fire officials, several wild brush fires have been started by careless people, flicking their cigarettes on the ground, for example. ?We are in a heightened alert at this time, as you know there [were] some fires upstate, we had a fire in town that was contributed to by the dry conditions. It's been a little while since it rained, so even though it's cool and springtime, we need to be cautious,? says Fairfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Christopher Tracy. Tracy also says people should use common sense. If they light something, such as a campfire or even burn their trash, they must be sure to fully extinguish it before walking away.
