Cohen said the Mets are "a major market team" and should have a budget in line with that.
"I'm not in this to be mediocre," said Cohen.
The Mets won the National League pennant in 2015, but have only made three playoff trips over the past 20 seasons.
Cohen touched on themes of consistent winning, adding that the Mets need to make "sharp baseball decisions" and that he wasn't looking for "a short-term fix."
"I don't want to be good one year and bad three years. I want to be good every year," said Cohen.
Cohen, who grew up a Mets fan on Long Island, brings a reported net worth of $14.5 billion -- making him baseball's richest owner. He set a goal to bring the team a World Series win within the next five years.
Alderson said it is "very likely" Luis Rojas will return as manager, but says there are no guarantees since the front office is currently being built.
Alderson also said he does not want to be the one making the baseball decisions but that he will have a seat at the table.
