A Watertown man is facing 50 counts of animal cruelty after animal control and police responded to tips of possible hoarding.

Police say 52-year-old Martin Oliver abused over 50 animals, including 25 dogs and 25 cats, in his Cobb Street home. Puppies and kittens were among the animals.

Authorities have had issues with this home in the past and expressed relief the animals are relatively healthy in weight and OK in condition, according to police.

The animals are currently receiving veterinary care and are in temporarily shelters in the area with hopes of adoption in the future.

Oliver claims he's had three litters of kittens in the last couple of months, making it challenging for him to keep up with the vaccinations and the food for each pet. He also said he would spend up to two hours a day cleaning pee pads and floors in his house.

Oliver is due in Waterbury Superior Court on Oct.14.
