State police are pushing to increase the safety on highways in Southwestern Connecticut.The effort is in response to more than 5,000 violations that were given to truckers in the first half of 2008. It was almost double the amount of violations during the first half of 2007.Officials say the violations included overweight trucks and broken axels. According to officials, the violations could pose serious threats to other drivers.Police say there will be an increased presence at weigh stations and extended hours of operation as part of the effort.
