Most people agree the old Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink needs an upgrade.
But agreeing on a proper redevelopment plan is a point of contention.
The outdated rink has seen better days since it was first built in 1971.
"Two weeks ago, we had a player put his knee through one of the boards and we had to cancel the game," Heidi Farmer says. "For a town like Greenwich that has the resources, this really is not even in the realm of acceptable."
The town's most recent plan to “flip” a newly constructed ice rink with the adjacent baseball field was rejected by the town's RTM for a host of reasons.
The Byram Neighborhood Association says the proposed plan would have completely changed the park, and taken away green space among other things.
First Selectman Fred Camillo (R) says replacing the rink has been a controversial topic in town for decades.
"We’ll get this done," Camillo says. "We just want to make sure it's done the right way with everything crossed and dotted, and with wide input from the community."
Neighbors who live near the rink told News 12 they're pleased with how the town has kept them involved in the process.
“They’ve sent numerous letters and phone calls to get everybody’s opinion about it," Uri Loiola says.
It’s the only public rink in town, and it will stand until Greenwich creates a new redevelopment plan which could come in the next few months, Camillo says.
