An elderly New Haven woman lost her month-long battle against West Nile virus Thursday, becoming the first Connecticut resident to die of the disease this year.Health officials say the woman may have been older than 75 and is the third person to die in Connecticut from the virus since 1999. Officials say West Nile is treatable but stress that people must seek help as soon as they become symptomatic.According to officials, mosquitoes trapped in Darien, Stamford and Stratford have tested positive for West Nile. The virus has also been found in mosquito populations in Greenwich and Bridgeport. Health officials say the riskiest time for contracting the disease is from late August to early September. They urge residents to use insecticides with DEET, limit time outdoors, wear jeans and long sleeves, check window screens and dump any standing water to thwart the mosquitoes.
