Three NYPD officers opened fire on an armed suspect early Sunday after a shootout left a detective struck in his ballistic vest.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Camani Bartletto of West Orange, New Jersey, now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder.

The violent incident unfolded July 5 at about 4:14 a.m. near St. Johns Place and Nostrand Avenue in the 77th Precinct.

According to the NYPD, officers assigned to a Mobile Field Force detail were parked in an unmarked police vehicle when Bartletto, armed with a gun, approached them. The officers quickly exited the vehicle to engage him.

During the confrontation, three officers discharged their service firearms. While Bartletto was not struck, a preliminary investigation later found ballistic damage on both the front and rear passenger sides of the police vehicle.

During the exchange, one detective was struck in the back, but his ballistic vest prevented the bullet from penetrating, leaving him with a contusion. A second officer sustained contusions to his face and shoulder. Both were taken by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where they are listed in stable condition.

Bartletto fled on foot, sparking a brief pursuit. Officers caught up with him several blocks away near Rogers Avenue and Union Street.

Authorities said Bartletto actively resisted arrest and refused to comply with commands, prompting officers to deploy a Taser to take him into custody.

Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage showing him in possession of a firearm about five minutes before the encounter.

Bartletto has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, along with criminal mischief.

The officers were in the area as part of the NYPD’s Fourth of July Violence Reduction Plan, which was aimed at curbing crew violence in the neighborhood.

The investigation is being led by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division.
