Weston Police Chief Anthony Land agreed to step down Monday after a two-month-long battle with town officials. In return for his exit, Land will receive $250,000 in severance pay. Land called police commission officials ?unhappy and miserable people? and said they made life ?miserable? for him. He claims that he?s being unfairly pushed out. Town officials disagree. ?He was found guilty by a jury of his peers of retaliating against an officer who complained about age discrimination,? said First Selectman Woody Bliss. ?There was a question of his use of the car and whether or not he was using it for public town use or private use.? Land, police chief for 17 years, said the charges against him are ridiculous, and that he was up against the personal grudges of several police commissioners. The town looked to terminate him, but instead of a legal struggle, Weston officials settled monetarily. ?It's not a great way to leave, but it's a great financial way to leave with some serious money in my pockets,? Land said. First Selectman Bliss told News 12 Connecticut that he?d ?rather give him the money than give it to the lawyers.? Land feels he?d have won a court battle, but he wouldn?t have wanted to go back and work for his now-former supervisors in Weston. Anthony Land now looks forward to painting in his free time and teaching professionally.
