In an effort to continue the crack down on DUI arrests, the Weston Police Department received a second Department of Transportation grant Sunday, which it says provides it with enough money to add two extra officers to night patrols.
Weston police say they applied for and received the same grant of $48,000 in 2008, which they used to pay for two extra officers who patrolled streets at night, looking for drunken and speeding drivers.
Last year, the department saw 150 percent more DUI arrests than in 2007. According to officers, the extra patrols increase safety on the roads and prevent innumerable accidents.
?We?ve seen a serious reduction of DUI crashes because of the DUI enforcement,? one officer says.
Every police department in the state is eligible for the Department of Transportation DUI enforcement grant, but Weston officers say the application process is tedious and involves a lot of paperwork and time. According to them, the work is a small price to pay for increased safety.
