Weston police say animal cruelty charges will be filed against a man who kept hundreds of animals in deplorable conditions on his property.
Many of the animals that were found last month at the Weston home, located on Newtown Turnpike, are continuing their journey toward recovery.
"When our doctors arrived on scene, they had to triage the situation," South Wilton Veterinary Group's Dr. Sitinas says. "There were many dead birds."
Police say the man who owns the animals previously ran an exotic pet shop in New York that closed down.
Rhode Island Parrot Rescue says it took in more than 100 exotic birds, many of which were malnourished, living in filth, and some diseased. The organization reports that five parrots have died, but says the rest of them are doing well.
A group out of Massachusetts called Rainforest Reptile Show rescued nearly 90 snakes, along with 10 birds, a tortoise and a lizard from the home. The organization says they're all doing better.
Weston officials say about 13 birds were too sick to travel and are currently being cared for by the South Wilton Veterinary Group. Once better, the vets say they'll go to the Rhode Island Parrot Rescue.
