Members of the Westport Community Gardens are worried that plans to rebuild Long Lots School will force them to pull up their roots.
Members say the are surprised the project poses a potential threat to the space, which has been used for growing for decades.
It now sits next to a new preserve that was planted last year with native trees and was paid for with substantial community donations.
Plans for the school project are still in the works and a committee will make a decision on whether to renovate or rebuild. Only some of the designs that have been discussed would eliminate the garden.
The timing of the next Long Lots School Building Committee meeting originally conflicted with the fireworks display scheduled for Thursday, so it has been rescheduled to Friday at 10 a.m.
A petition has been created to support the Westport Community Gardens.
News 12 reached out to the chair of the committee but has not heard back.
