Two Wilton police lieutenants are taking their passion for the Special Olympics to new heights.

Rob Kluk and David Hartman are preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Connecticut.

Both Kluk and Hartman have been involved with the organization and its athletes for years.

"I just admire everything about them, what they go through in their lives. And to see the joy on their face and to help them out and to see them run with us and compete in the events, it just puts a smile on anybody's face," said Kluk.

Kluk and Hartman know the athletes deal with metaphorical mountains every day of their lives. So in February, they'll join 10 other police officers from Connecticut and New Jersey and take on a physical one.

Kluk said it should take them five days to climb up the mountain and two days to come down.

The two have raised more than $22,000 for the Special Olympics, surpassing their goal of $20,000. They have since raised their goal to $30,000.
